We hear a lot about endometriosis, but much less about adenomyosis. Yet, it affects many menstruating people, often after 35 or 40 years old.
Often called "internal endometriosis", it shares similar symptoms but is located in a different place. The main sign? Hemorrhagic periods and a painful uterus. Explanations.
Article Summary
1- The difference between Endometriosis and Adenomyosis
It is very simple to visualize:
| Endometriosis | Adenomyosis |
|---|---|
| The tissue grows OUTSIDE the uterus (Ovaries, fallopian tubes, intestines...). | The tissue infiltrates INSIDE the uterine muscle (the myometrium). |

In adenomyosis, the uterus often becomes larger, "softer", and very sensitive to pressure. It has trouble contracting properly to stop the bleeding.
2- Symptom #1: Hemorrhage
While endometriosis is primarily characterized by pain, adenomyosis is primarily characterized by abundance.
- Very heavy periods (menorrhagia) with the presence of large clots.
- Periods that last a long time (more than 7 days).
- Feeling of heaviness in the lower abdomen.
3- Which period product to choose with adenomyosis?
Adenomyosis poses two problems: intense flow and uterine pain (the uterus is "raw").
- Avoid tampons: They dry out and can rub against an already inflamed cervix or walls.
-
The High Capacity solution: Since the bleeding is heavy, you need a period product that holds up.
👉 La Cup Luneale Size L (30ml) or the Menstrual Disc (35ml) are often favored to avoid running to the bathroom every hour. - Beware of the suction effect: A uterus affected by adenomyosis can be sensitive to suction. The Menstrual Disc is often the best option because it does not work by suction effect, unlike ordinary cups.
