This is a common question among people committed to animal welfare: "Is La Cup Luneale vegan?", "Is it tested on animals?".
The short answer is: yes, the product is vegan (zero animal-derived ingredients). But the full answer is more nuanced when it comes to historical testing of medical-grade silicone. Here is our full transparency policy on this sensitive topic.
Table of contents
1- The basics: Vegetarian, plant-based or vegan?
A quick reminder to clarify the terms:
- Vegetarian: Does not eat animal flesh.
- Plant-based: Consumes no animal products whatsoever (no eggs, no dairy, no honey).
- Vegan: A lifestyle. Refuses all forms of animal exploitation (food, leather, wool, zoos, circuses, cosmetic testing…).
It is this last category — the most ethically demanding — that we address here.
2- The material: Is silicone vegan?
From a composition standpoint, the answer is 100% YES.
La Cup Luneale is made from Platinum Medical-Grade Silicone.
Silicone is not an animal by-product. It is derived from
Silica — i.e. sand (rock). Like glass. It contains no animal fats, no beeswax, nothing of animal origin whatsoever.
3- The uncomfortable question: Animal testing
Does Luneale test its products on rabbits? Absolutely not.
We are a French brand, and European regulations strictly prohibit animal
testing for cosmetic and hygiene products.
But there is a technical "however":
For a silicone to be certified "Medical Implantable" (meaning it is authorised to remain inside the
human body for more than 29 days, as with implants or menstrual cups), health authorities require absolute proof of safety.
The manufacturer of the raw material (the base silicone) was required, years ago, to carry out mandatory tests to obtain medical approval. This is the law, to guarantee human safety.
👉 So: Your Cup Luneale has never been tested. But the raw material, at its historical origin, was tested in order to be validated by science.
4- Why we don't hold a "Cruelty Free" label
We could pay to obtain certain "Vegan" labels that accept this historical nuance (past testing of the raw material). We meet their criteria.
However, we will never be able to hold the "Cruelty Free" label (the little rabbit), as its specifications are extremely strict and reject any ingredient that has ever been tested — even historically, for legally mandated medical reasons.
We prefer to be honest with you rather than display a marketing logo that would obscure this regulatory reality.
5- Conclusion: The Luneale commitment
If the strict definition of veganism rejects any history of testing, then no medical-grade silicone cup in the world is vegan (because medical silicone had to be tested at some point).
However, Luneale is a committed brand:
- All our care products (La Mousse, Le Cleaner) are vegan and untested.
- Our cups contain no animal-derived ingredients.
- By using a cup, you avoid thousands of plastic waste items that pollute the oceans and harm marine life.
That is our way of protecting living things. 💚
