Virginity Tests: Why They Are Impossible and Prohibited

  • In some families or communities, the pressure of virginity before marriage is such that "proof" is sometimes demanded. These are the infamous virginity tests or certificates.

Beyond the humiliation, you need to know two essential things: these tests have no scientific value (a doctor cannot tell if you are a virgin) and they are now banned by law in France.

👉 To understand why the hymen proves nothing, read our anatomy article.

1- What does this "test" consist of?

The virginity test generally consists of a visual inspection of the hymen, or the infamous "two-finger test", performed by a doctor or a matron to check if the hymen is "intact".

This practice is based on a medieval belief: that the hymen is a closed barrier that breaks once and for all. However, we know today that this is false.

2- Why is it scientifically impossible?

The World Health Organization (WHO) is clear: "Examination of the hymen cannot distinguish a virgin woman from one who has had sexual intercourse."

    Proof by the numbers:
A clinical study showed that out of 36 pregnant teenagers, 34 had an "intact" appearing hymen.
If even a pregnancy does not always modify the hymen, how could a simple intercourse do so visibly?

The explanation: The hymen is elastic. It can stretch and return to its shape. Moreover, there are naturally very open or notched hymens in virgin women. Therefore, no examination can "prove" anything.

3- What does the Law in France say? (Ban)

France has strengthened its legislation to protect women against this gynecological violence.

Since the law of August 24, 2021, reinforcing respect for the principles of the Republic:

    • It is FORBIDDEN for a doctor to perform a virginity test.
    • It is FORBIDDEN to issue a virginity certificate.

The penalties: A healthcare professional who violates this law faces up to 1 year in prison and a €15,000 fine (Art. 225-4-10 of the Penal Code).

4- Are you under pressure? Who to contact?

If you are asked to take this test, or if you are facing family pressure related to your virginity, know that you are not alone and the law protects you.

    • Talk to a trusted doctor or a school nurse. They have the obligation to help you and to refuse this illegal test.

Conclusion: Your body belongs to you. No tradition justifies a medical intrusion without scientific foundation.
