It's the classic panic. You have a yeast infection (Candida Albicans) or bacterial vaginosis, and you were wearing your cup when the symptoms started.
The question immediately arises: "Is my cup contaminated forever? Should I throw it in the trash so I don't reinfect myself next month?"
The short answer is: NO, absolutely do not throw it away!
But there is a specific protocol to follow to make it as good as new. We explain everything.
Article Summary
1- Why you don't need to throw it away (The Science)
Unlike a makeup sponge or certain plastics, La Cup Luneale is made of Platinum Medical Silicone.
It is a non-porous material.
This means that bacteria or microscopic fungi cannot "enter" inside the material. They stay on the surface. Unlike a tampon which is a breeding ground for bacteria, La Cup is a smooth surface.
👉 Conclusion: Proper sterilization is enough to kill 100% of intruders. Your Cup will become sterile and safe again, just like on the first day.
2- The "Good as New" Protocol (3 steps)
To be certain of eliminating any risk of recurrence, do not settle for a quick rinse. Follow this strict protocol before your next cycle:
Step 1: Mechanical Cleaning (The most important)
Bacteria can form an invisible "biofilm" that sometimes resists heat. It must be physically broken down.
👉 Use your usual gentle cleanser (or La Mousse Luneale) and water. Vigorously rub the entire surface of the cup only with your clean fingers (focus on the Moonpad and the rim).
Never use an abrasive sponge, nail brush, or scratching object. Even if you want to "do it well", this would create micro-tears on the surface of the silicone. These scratches, invisible to the naked eye, would become breeding grounds for bacteria impossible to clean afterward.
Step 2: Thermal Sterilization (The final blow)
This is the step that eliminates bacteria and fungi. But beware, the method must be rigorous:
- The right action: Submerge the cup in a pot filled with water and leave it on the heat (or stove).
- The time: Let it boil (it must bubble!) for a minimum of 5 to 7 minutes.
A common mistake is putting your cup in a bowl and pouring boiling water over it (like an infusion). It is ineffective.
As soon as you pour the water, its temperature drops. It is no longer hot enough to kill resistant spores. It is imperative to maintain an active boil (100°C) for the entire indicated time.
Tip: Place La Cup inside a metal kitchen whisk. This will prevent it from touching the burning bottom of the pot and getting damaged.
Step 3: Inspection
Once dry, check that there are no tears or cuts. If the silicone is intact, bacteria have nowhere to hide. You are good to go!
3- Can you wear your cup DURING the infection?
Even if you love your Cup, the answer is NO.
Why?
- Irritation: Your mucous membranes are already inflamed, red, and painful. Inserting and removing an internal device can worsen the pain.
- Treatment: Antifungal creams and suppositories prescribed by doctors are often greasy or chemical. They can alter the quality of your Cup's silicone if they remain in prolonged contact. Furthermore, the Cup would prevent the suppository from melting and properly coating the vagina.
💡 The advice: During the treatment (generally 7 to 10 days), opt for external organic cotton period products or your menstrual panties (which you will wash at 60°C afterward).
4- What about other period products (Panties, pads)?
While the cup is easily sterilized, this is not the case for everything else. Be careful not to ruin your lingerie or reinfect yourself:
- The Menstrual Panty (and washable pads):
⚠️ Absolutely do not wash them at 60°C! The technical waterproof layer (PUL) would melt and your panty would no longer be leak-proof. This applies to all brands of menstrual panties.
👉 The solution: Wash them at 30°C or 40°C (depending on the label), imperatively adding a laundry disinfectant (like Sanytol or Lysol) in the fabric softener dispenser. This is the only way to kill fungi at low temperatures. - The "Peace of Mind" option:
For the duration of the treatment (and as long as it itches), the easiest thing is sometimes to use disposable external period products (organic cotton if possible). Once used, trash. Zero risk. - The menstrual sponge:
⛔ TO THROW AWAY. It is a natural porous material. It is impossible to deep-clean and disinfect it without destroying it. Do not take any risks, straight to the trash.
A final word
A yeast infection or vaginosis is unpleasant, but it is not a fatality for your gear. Your La Cup Luneale is a durable investment designed to accompany you for years, even in the event of health hiccups.
Take the time to heal, follow the boiling protocol (for real, not like an herbal tea!), and regain your freedom of movement safely during your next cycle.
